Please help with broken library ...

Hi I'm working on my wife's iTunes right now. She has invested many many hours importing cd's into iTunes and setting up her playlists.

Then along comes the new update, and it's all messed up. I won't go into details, but some playlists are still good, others display the "!" icon next to the files and give the message that iTunes no longer knows where the file is. From what I can see, there is really no rhyme or reason to what is lost and what is still good.

I did some research in using the .xml file to rebuild a library, but even that didn't fix everything. So...

I'm asking you nice people - is there any way to just point this darn program to a file system and build a library based on that? I mean that would be soooo much easier, I couldn't have been the first one to think of it. Even if there is a utility that I would have to purchase to do it, it would be worth it. My wife was close to tears when she imagined the amount of work that she would have to do.

Thanks to all. I really hope someone has something to help.

respectfully,
Qal
